A wedding is a big event - perhaps the biggest of your life - so it’s understandable that you’d want your wedding photos to be good ones. After all, it’s your day, and you should look your best!
One thing about bride and groom portraits is that the couple will likely be wearing clothes in opposite colors - black for the groom and white for the bride. This can make it difficult to get the best possible photos because different lights are needed to accentuate different colors.
Still, that doesn’t mean you can’t get good photos. Let’s consider the best time to take bride and groom portraits.
Indoor Photos
For indoor wedding photos, you have to consider two things - the indoor lighting, and any natural light that may be coming in.
Natural light is best for any kind of photo, but the time of day also matters. For indoor photos, midday natural light is best, as long as it’s not falling directly on the couple. Finding a good spot for your photos may be tricky but large windows often let in enough light to make the picture look good.
On the other hand, if your focus is on indoor lighting, this will depend on the type of lighting and the venue itself, rather than the time. Depending on where your wedding is held, you can find some pretty good spots for your bride and groom portraits.
Outdoor Photos
For outdoor photos, getting good pictures really depends on the time of day. If the place you’re in is somewhat warm, it can quickly get hot during the day and standing around in wedding clothes can be uncomfortable. This could make you look sweaty and tired in your photos, which is far from ideal.
However, even in hotter weather, getting your photos taken later in the day will get you some pretty great results. At this time, about an hour or so before sunset, there aren’t too many shadows, and the sunlight isn’t excessively bright either.
The light becomes softer and warmer and can make your wedding photos look a lot more romantic than they would if the lights were too harsh. Of course, this is also under the assumption that the skies are clear and the sun is out. If it’s cloudy or overcast, you may need to take them earlier in the day.
Also make it a point to check out the location, so that you know which places are cast in shadow and how geographical features can affect how much sun you’re getting.
