For any line of work, there are always some misconceptions about how things go and wedding photography is no different. Maybe they are based on things that were once true, or are rooted in misunderstanding, but debunking them is necessary if you don’t want to end up making mistakes around your wedding photos.
Let’s debunk some wedding photography myths!
A Good Camera is All You Need
Plenty of people think that to get good photos, all you need is a good camera. This is not true! Having good tools doesn’t mean you know how to use them properly. Photography isn’t about clicking a button, it’s about knowing the right angles, taking dynamic photos that can tell a story, knowing what lighting works and how to make the subject stand out.
A good camera is important, but it’s only the first step. Even if you have a good camera, don’t use that as an excuse to not hire a professional! The quality of your wedding photos depends on whether you hire a professional or not.
All Photographers Are The Same
Even if you hire a professional, you can’t just hire anyone. There are differences between professionals as well. From price points to equipment to experience - there is a huge difference between amateurs and experienced, professional photographers.
For your wedding, you don’t want to hire someone who’s just entering the field. While it’ll be costlier, hiring a professional with experience is always a better option. Not only can they deliver on their promises, but they are a lot better prepared to handle crisis situations like unexpected weather changes and stressful circumstances.
You’ll be a lot happier with your decision if you work with someone who knows what they’re doing rather than someone just starting out!
Photoshop Can Fix Everything
While it’s true that photo editing can do a lot, there’s a limit to how much it can do. Not every mistake can be corrected in Photoshop. Some photos need a redo, and others may need you to adjust your pose, clothes and everything else.
Hiring a photographer who knows what they’re doing means they spend less time on Photoshop, and give you a lot better photos than you’d get otherwise.
Wedding Photographers Only Work on Wedding Day
While this is more about the photographer than the photos themselves, it is important to note that the photos are actually just the tip of the iceberg.
Wedding photography involves having engagement sessions so you feel comfortable in front of the camera, working around schedules before the wedding, visiting the venue to get an idea of what the photos would and should look like. After the wedding, photographers spend hours editing and refining the photos so that you get the best possible result at the end of it!
