Choosing a wedding photographer can be a very difficult process to go through when searching for that professional that fits into your budget and style. There are tons of local wedding photographers and even more when your search goes nationally. So, how do you choose a wedding photographer that is a good fit for you? We’ll dive into this below to help make this process a bit easier for you.
Some of the things to take into consideration when hiring a wedding photographer. What are some of the things that are most important to you? Do you want someone with 20 years of experience? Are you looking for someone you can laugh and cut-up with? Do you want an artistic style, edgy and new, dreamy and romantic, whimsical and fun or something else?
Type of Images
One of the first thing that you’ll be drawn to is a wedding photographer’s style. With so many different unique styles it can be narrowed down simply by the type that you’re drawn to. Like a moth to a flame, some pictures just speak to you. Some wedding photographers can shoot multiple styles depending on the client’s needs and preference. From soft and dreamy, vibrant and fun, candid, posed, fine art, bold and edgy or a documentary style- they are all very different.
Packages Offered- So many Options!
Once you’ve narrowed down the style that you want it’s time to start looking in to what can your potential wedding photographer offer YOU. Some offer an hourly rate while others may offer packages that will make it easier for you to decide. Do you want your photographer to document the entire day, just the ceremony or a mix of it all? Do you want two photographers? Will you have prints or albums?
Personality
Who wants to spend 8 hours with someone that you just don’t jive with? I know I don’t! It’s one of the most important things to take into consideration when hiring someone for your special day. I have heard many horror stories of wedding photographers that had a bad attitude, they were very unaccommodating, late or worse- ALL the above. Let’s face it, not everyone gets along and that’s ok. I always suggest meeting in person, so you can make a good judgment on whether you think being around this person for a day is something you’re comfortable with. Is your photographer excited about your vision or do they have suggestions? More than likely, your photographer will be by your side more than your mother on your wedding day- choose carefully.
Where is Your Wedding Going to Be?
Most photographers will travel to almost any place in the world, but a travel fee will likely apply. If you are looking at a wedding venue that will hold the ceremony outdoors, does your photographer have an indoor backup plan? Making sure that all your bases are covered can be the difference between a good and a great wedding photographer.
The BIG Question- How Much?
Saving the best for last! Wedding photographers can range from $500-$10,000+. In researching many different photographers, I have found that most reputable wedding photographers are around the $3000 range for 8 hours of wedding day coverage. This varies widely with skill levels, location, and markets. Ultimately your budget may not include a wedding photographer that charges $5,000. Always ask what is included in the price including engagement session, bridal portraits, digital files, prints, albums, etc.
